Are you Mobile Friendly?
Like it or not, the most popular search engine in use today is Google. It comes as no surprise then, we design websites which are favoured by Google and this reflects in the Search Engine Results achieved. What this means to you is your website will rank well for the keywords you have chosen to promote with, and to your potential customers it means your website is likely to come up as a result when they are searching for products or services you sell or can provide.
So far, so good.
With the arrival of smart phones and tablet computers, users were no longer tethered to their desktops and so mobile browsing, and search was born. It comes as no surprise then when the dramatic rise of internet users are now mobile and their usage is increasing exponentially to such an extent it can no longer be ignored. Google know this all too well and have been encouraging web designers to build sites that are technically known as “responsive” – adaptable to a range of devices such as those ubiquitous smart phones and tablets as well as traditional laptops and desktops. Those websites designed in this way, with suitable content, are deemed “mobile friendly”.
Why should this matter to you?
Well, because just two weeks ago Google changed the way they rank and display websites to favour mobile friendly sites over those not designed to be. From then on the changes were dramatic with some big name sites almost disappearing from view, at least certainly from those all-important first few results pages. Disastrous for eCommerce certainly! For some this became known as “mobilegeddon” such was the dramatic impact. So it makes perfect sense in a world with less boundaries and technology enabling eCommerce on the move any website should be built with ALL devices in mind, mobiles of course but tablets too.
How can I tell if my website is Mobile Friendly?
What If my site isn’t Mobile Friendly? What can I do? Can you help?

Village Cat builds Websites that are managed by a backoffice system known as a Content Management System, or CMS for short. We choose a CMS that fits the role, and some are flexible enough to be right for many roles. Village Cat Web Design base most of their clients websites on WordPress, Joomla! or Prestashop, and by far the most popular of these is WordPress. We don’t use website builder packages because they are just too limited for the task. Of course, back in the early days we would hand-code our websites using notepad and HTML, but these days clients like to have access and control of their websites themselves, so what better than an easy to use system that’s intuitive and as straightforward as PowerPoint or Word.
There are numerous good reasons for using a CMS. We build with the future in mind, with regular updates being part of the package. This is something that sets us apart from other web design agencies. Unlike other website creators we make no secret of the CMS platforms we use, because we have nothing to hide. Our expertise, and the reason your might hire us to design a website for you, is in understanding your business and what you want your new website to do for you. Bringing together the content, the images, the functionality and features. This is all time consuming stuff of course and could easily take over many hours or days of your time, time you could put to better use than playing with web design! Let us take the strain, we have a lot of experience and can rapidly get the development work underway and your site live quickly.
The major aspect you would usually hire a web designer for is the much misunderstood and highly mysterious Search Engine Optimisation. SEO is important to the search engines and helps them and their users, those people looking for the products and services your company provides, to find you easily and hopefully you in preference to your competitors. Notice we don’t make false promises or try and hoodwink you into spending huge sums … neither are necessary and while this kind of thing is common place in the web design / SEO industry, we don’t subscribe to that way of working and that’s why We Are Different.

Have you noticed the number of enquiries have diminished, the phone rings less, the sales have dried up? Why are there less visitors to your website? It always worked so well in the past, so what’s gone wrong? Is a new website the answer? Perhaps a Facebook page will fix it? What should you do? Well the good news is it’s not too late to fix the problem. The first step is Do Not Panic. Don’t make rash decisions and make changes in a hurry. This could do more harm than good. The best approach is to take a step back to evaluate your on-line presence (or lack of it), consider what your customers would like to see from your website and above all be open minded to change. Using a local consultant is highly recommended, as is getting more than one quote. Should you choose Village Cat Web Design what can you expect from us? Well, we understand that you are busy and you don’t have time to understand all the technical stuff. We understand business and that you are looking for results. As a small business, you can’t afford to be messed about and budgets maybe tight. For us, that’s not a problem. Why not give us the opportunity chat with you about your requirements…
